Geneva, 14-15 November 2019
During a stay in Geneva, the President of the IHFFC, Thilo Marauhn, had the opportunity to brief representatives of dozens of States from all regions of the world on the mandate and work of the Commission.
He attended a meeting with Humanitarian Experts of the African Group, met with Permanent Representatives of a number of Asian States and held briefings for States from Latin America and the Caribbean as well as for the Member States of the European Union.
During his conversations, Mr. Marauhn encouraged States to recognize the competence of the IHFFC and resort to its services in order to enhance respect of international humanitarian law. Indeed, the upcoming 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent in December 2019 presents an excellent opportunity for States to signal commitments in this regard.
While in Geneva, Professor Marauhn also chaired a panel at a scientific colloquium on the "The role of human rights mechanisms in implementing international humanitarian law". The colloquium was organized by the University of Geneva in cooperation with the Geneva Academy. In its working paper, the Academy highlights the IHFFC as a mechanism for the implementation of international humanitarian law established by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.
